История

Ранние годы для Сборной Испании складывались по-разному. В 1920 она впервые выступила на Олимпиаде в Антверпене. Превая игра со сборной Дании собрала 3.000 зрителей в Брюсселе, которые стали свидетелями победы молодой испанской сборной 1-0. После удачного старта Ис. завоевала серебро, а хозяева бельгийцы - золото. В 1921 Ис. провела первый матч на своём поле в Бильбао против Бельгии и победила 2-0. В 1929 "Яростные" впервые в истории для не-Британской команды победили Англию в Мадриде. Ис. отказалась от участия в Кубке Мира ФИФА в 1930, мотивируя это тем, что поездка на пароходе в Уругвай очень длительная и рискованная. В 1934 зато они приехали в Италию /не так далеко/ играть в своём первом Кубке Мира. Испанцы дошли до полуфинала, где уступили 0-1 хозяевам. Гражданская Война в Ис. и 2-я Мировая Война прервали футбольные игры, но в 1950 на Кубке Мира Ис. вернулась и вернулась красиво. Выиграв все 3 игры в группе /США, Чили и Англия/, испанцы в итоге заняли 4-е место - лучший для себя результат по сей день. Ис. не попала в 2 последующих Кубка Мира, а в Евро 1960 выбыла в четвертьфинале, когда испанцы во главе с Ди Стефано отказались играть в СССР.

Чемпионы Европы

В 1962 Кубке Мира испанцам снова не повезло - они попали в трудную группу /Бразилия, Чехословакия и Мексика/, которую не смогли пройти. Но тренер Хосе Вийялонга вскоре привёл Ис. к престижному титулу в Евро 1964. Они обыграли в полуфинале сильную команду Венгрии 2-1, а в финале встретились со сборной СССР на Сантьяго Бернабеу в Мадриде в присутствии 80.000 болельщиков. Испанцы забили уже на 6-й минуте /Переда/, но 2 минуты спустя Галимзян Хусаинов сравнял счёт. Напряжённый матч подходил к концу, когда на 84-й минуте Марселино Мартинес провёл решающий мяч. В 1966 на Кубке Мира в Англии чемпионы Европы испанцы выбыли после группового турнира, проиграв Аргентине и Германии и победив Швейцарию.

Кубок Мира 1982

После ещё одного долгого периода без впечатляющих результатов Испания принимала Кубок Мира ФИФА в 1982. Впервые участвовали 24 команды. Ис. попала в лёгкую группу /Гондурас, Югославия и Сев.Ирландия/, но уже в первом матче неожиданно уступила Гондурасу 0-1. Затем она выиграла у Югославии 2-1 и проиграла 0-1 Сев.Ирландии; тем не менее вышла во 2-ю групповую стадию. Там испанцы проиграли Германии 1-2 и сыграли 0-0 с Англией. Они вылетели из турнира, а тренер Хосе Сантамария потерял работу.

Всегда не хватает чуть-чуть

После неудачи в Кубке Мира 1982 на своём поле Ис. собиралась поправить дела на Евро 1984. Но это оказалось не так легко. В последнем групповом отборочном матче им надо было разбить Мальту с перевесом в 11 голов! Невероятное случилось - 12-1! Испанцы пробились в финальную стадию. Там они не без труда всё-таки добрались до финала с хозяевами французами. Мишель Платини вёл своих к победе 2-0, оставив Ис. на 2-м месте. Большие надежды имели испанцы во главе с тренером Мигелем Муньосом и лидером на поле Эмилио Бутрагуэно на Кубке Мира 1986. Победа над Данией Михаэля Лаудрупа /5-1, 4гола забил Бутрагуэно/ укрепила надежды, но только до следующего матча с Бельгией. Игра решалась по серии пенальти /1-1/, бельгийский вратарь Пфафф был в ударе, и испанцы вернулись домой. Опять неудача в Евро 1988; а к Кубку Мира 1990 они пришли с новым тренером Мартином Васкесом. Это было последнее выступление в Кубке Мира для Бутрагуэно. Уверенно пройдя групповой турнир, Ис. вылетела после первой же игры с Югославией /1-2/ в стадии с выбыванием. В Евро 1992 испанцы не попали вообще.

Золото Барселоны

Зато в этом же году Барселона принимала Летние Олимпийские Игры, и обновлённая сборная Ис. жаждала вернуть золото, потерянное ещё в 1920. Кико, Луис Энрике и Гвардиола привели "Яростных" к победе в финале над Польшей 3-2.

Конец 90-х - 2006

Late 90’s to 2006 In a attempt to continue the siccess of the Olympic team, Javier Clemente was announced as the coach to lead Spain in 1994 World Cup but the team didn’t pass the quarter-finals once again this time falling in a controversial game against Italy. And another quarter-finals flunk in the Euro 1996 caused Spain to once more time start a renovation in the squad for the 1998 World Cup in France. Some new talents were added to balance the experience of Zubizarreta and others.

Fernando Morientes, Kiko and Raul were the new rising stars responsibles for leading Spain offense. But things didn’t go as planned for the Spaniards and they didn’t even pass the group stage. This was enough for the Spanish Federation to fire coach Javier Clemente.

In the 2000 Euro another coach, more young players and the another quarterfinal elimination. Spain faced World Champions France and the game ended 2-1 for the Frechmen with Raul missing a penalty kick in the end of first half. And the curse of the quarterfinals continued.

That same curse would repeat itself one more time in the 2002 World Cup. This time the fans were really excited about the team finally moving to the semifinals as Spain was to face hosts South Korea in the quartefinal match. After a goaless 120-minute game the decision went to the penalty shootout. Sadness took over the Spaniards when young star Joaquin missed Spain’s fouth penalty kick and they saw Korean defender Hong Myung-Bo score the goal that would send Spain National Team home earlier once again.

The presence of new talents like Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso made the European press to name Spain as one of the top favorites to win the Euro 2004. Also, the fact that the tournament would happen in Portugal was considered an advantage for the Spanish. But the team failed to move to the second round of the competition and that is considered the biggest disappointing performance since the 1998 World Cup.

Luis Aragonés was appointed Spain’s coach right after the team got eliminated from the Euro in 2004. He would be the responsible for rebuilding a team that would finally move past the quarterfinals in a World Cup. But Spain strugged in the qualifying stage and when they got to the 2006 World Cup in Germany, few people risked to give their opinion on how the team would perform. The group stage showed an efficient and convincing Spanish side who qualified after winning all its three games against Ukraine (4-0), Tunisia (3-1) and Saudi Arabia (1-0). But this time Spain didn’t even make it to the quarterfinals. France with a 3-1 victory send Fernando torres, David Villa, Raul, Xabi Alonso, Iker Casillas, Puyol and the rest of the good Spanish team back home after the round of 16.

Euro 2008 With a squad filled with stars Spain seems ready to shine in this edition of the European Nations Championship. The team qualified in first place of group F with 9 wins 1 draw and only 2 losses.

Spain goes to the final group stage of the competition with Russia, Sweden and title holders Greece.

The team looks good and will count on a solid defense with Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Puyol leading them. A creative midfield with Fabregas, Iniesta and Xavi and a demolishig offense with David Villa, Fernando Torres and possibly Raul make Spain, once again, one of the favorites to take the title. The question is: Can they perform and this time move past the quarterfinals?

Management Head Coach: Luis Aragonés “El Sabio de la hortaleza” (The Wise from the Fortress) is his nickname. With an image that fades away as La Roja’s football, Aragonés is not having a popular moment. After the World Cup, where his team started out very well and then lost iin 1/8 finals against France, the coach wasn’t able to find the way to get people interested with the team again. They are now in a transitional stage between young players and the left aside veterans.
